In September, Dry Bulk magazine reported on the revolutionary grain loading system used by Terminal Puerto Rosario and became the first terminal in the world to use containerised bulk handling to export grain.

The terminal, located along the banks of the Parana River is a multi-purpose terminal serving the region’s growing commerce.  With grain being the most important commodity in Argentina to export, the terminal set about a solution to conventional export methods to reduce material loss during the loading, transport and unloading process, reduce clean-up and eradicate contamination of the grain from unwanted rodents.

Considering their options, the management team at TPR discovered a method called “Containerised Bulk Handling” (CBH) which cleverly uses the container as the method of transportation, storage and unloading.

With low capital expenditure and a short set-up time without the need for expensive Silos or warehouses was excactly what TPR wanted.

“We are very pleased with the containerised grain system, as it allows a much cleaner operation.  The flexibilty of the system with no silos or conveyors on berth is a big plus for the port” Juan Carlos Cruzat, Head of Container Terminal TPR.
