Robert Arthur Mills Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 IBJ Awards
We are proud to announce that our founder, Robert Arthur Mills, has been presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Bulk Journal (IBJ) Awards 2025, held on Monday, 17th November at the historic Titanic Hotel in Liverpool.
The recognition is especially meaningful, as Liverpool is not only the host city of the awards but also Robert’s hometown, where his remarkable journey in engineering and innovation first began.
A Legacy Rooted in Liverpool
Robert’s story is one of dedication, craftsmanship, and visionary engineering. Born and raised in Crosby overlooking the River Mersey, his early exposure to shipping and the Port of Liverpool shaped the ambitions that would later drive his career. Beginning as an apprentice steel fabricator in the family business, he quickly demonstrated exceptional technical ability, earning the Tiberman Prize for welding in 1969 and becoming well-known in the late 1960s and 70s for his expertise in container and ship repairs, including specialised aluminium welding.
From Local Workshop to Global Engineering Pioneer
Robert assumed leadership of the family business in 1970, designing and manufacturing his first container lifting spreader in 1972. This marked the start of a series of innovations that would eventually transform global cargo handling.
Throughout the 1970s and 80s, he expanded and refined container spreader designs, introduced RAM’s first telescopic spreaders and, by the mid-1980s, secured significant international contracts—including major ship-to-shore spreader deliveries to leading US shipping lines.
Innovating the Future of Bulk Handling
One of Robert’s most influential inventions emerged from a student development project at Liverpool Polytechnic in 1987/88—the concept of rotating a container to discharge bulk materials. This idea became the foundation of the RAM Revolver, now recognised worldwide for enabling economical, environmentally friendly containerised bulk handling. Today, RAM Revolver systems are in operation across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa and Australasia.
Global Growth and Strategic Vision
Robert’s leadership and strategic insight led to crucial partnerships—including the long-standing collaboration with NatSteel in Singapore beginning in 1991, which supported RAM’s global expansion. By the early 2000s, RAM innovations such as the CenterSpread and the SingFlex headblock system were transforming productivity at major container terminals worldwide.
Robert’s creative engineering extended into offshore operations as well, with the development of the RAM Hands-free lifting system for BP’s operations in the Caspian Sea, improving safety by eliminating the need for manual slinging.
A Truly Remarkable Career
One of Robert’s most memorable personal milestones came in 2006 with the opening of RAM’s purpose-built 64,000 m² factory in Changshu, China—a far cry from the 200 m² family workshop where it all began. As he described it: “The day I arrived and saw the RAM Spreaders logo emblazoned on the building… it took my breath away.”
Today, the RAM portfolio includes more than 80 products serving both container and bulk handling markets worldwide—each one a reflection of the innovation, ingenuity, and leadership Robert has brought to the industry over decades.

Robert’s Lifetime Achievement Award stands as a fitting tribute to a man whose work has reshaped modern cargo operations, improved efficiency and safety worldwide, and established RAM Spreaders as a global leader in lifting technologies.
